Ask A Brewer:
Yeast Culturing: Jeff and Mike answered questions about yeast culturing/saving. It started with a string starter with 1L water, 100g DME, and (1) bottle/packet of yeast. You can make 1-2 gallons of starter, brew with half and keep the other half clean and pure in the fridge for future starters.
Yeast can be harvested post primary fermentation and washed with sterile water and refrigerated for later. You can also collect yeast off the top by intentionally blowing off into a secondary vessel with sterile water. A third vessel or air lock is needed.
Hop growing: It is harvest time. Next month trim back the vines and add a layer of compost over the rhizome. Hold back water until it starts to bud next spring. For controlled hop production, trim back the emerging vines to 3-5 of the strongest.
Event Recap:
Organic Brew: Great time with the Club brewing organic Dreamsicle. Thank you to Mark and Bev for the spa, equipment and snacks.
